Relieving Your Sensitive Teeth Problems Now

Sensitive teeth are far more common than most people realize. As many as 40 million adults in the United States alone will suffer from sensitive teeth at some point in their lifetime. Luckily, there are simple ways to prevent the condition from ever starting, and to relieve the sensitivity if it does ever become an issue.

Sensitive Teeth Causes

Sensitive teeth are caused by an irritation of the nerves in the teeth. When the teeth are exposed to cold or heat they become uncomfortable because the nerves are reacting to the extreme temperatures. The problem can also flare up during brushing or flossing due to the abrasion.

These nerves become susceptible to irritation when the enamel layer of the teeth starts to wear down, leaving the nerves underneath vulnerable. The most common cause is simply poor oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing, and seeing a dentist regularly ensure that the hard outer layer of the teeth stays thick and strong. Erosion can also happen from grinding the teeth, brushing too vigorously, or by repeated exposure to stomach acid.

Sensitive Teeth Prevention and Relief

If you are proactive about your oral health, you can avoid sensitive teeth altogether. And if you already have the issue and your sensitive teeth symptoms are starting to affect your life, there are simple ways to relieve the discomfort.

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene – We already mentioned this one, but it is always worth repeating. The single best way to avoid developing sensitive teeth and most other oral health issues are to brush and floss daily and regularly see a dentist.
  • Don’t Brush Too Hard – You don’t need to apply pressure in order to use your toothbrush effectively. Focus on getting every part of your teeth or gums, and avoid brushing more often than your dentist recommends.
  • Avoid Acidic Foods – Foods with high acidity like fruit juice, vinegar, and soft drinks can wear away your enamel. Consume them in moderation.
  • Avoid Grinding Your Teeth – For most people, this is inadvertent. Ask your dentist for a mouth guard you can wear while you sleep.
  • Use Fluoridated Products – The fluoride in toothpaste and mouthwash helps to strengthen the enamel.
  • Use a Sensitivity Toothpaste – These special kinds of toothpaste have been specifically designed for people with sensitive teeth. They help to relieve sensitivity and repair the affected areas. They are widely available over the counter.
  • Use a Soft Tooth Brush – These brushes have softer bristles that many people with sensitive teeth find more comfortable.
