Dr. Imelda Kwakye-Ackah moved to the United States from Ghana at age 19 to pursue her University education. Dr. Imelda began her professional journey, completing her BS in Chemical Engineering (with a Minor in Economics) at UMBC in 2012. During graduate training at Duke University’s Engineering Management program, she pursued orthodontic treatment in our Chapel Hill office, where she met long-time Durham Orthodontist and Orthodontic educator Dr. Richard Beane, who opened the world of dentistry and specifically Orthodontics to Dr. Imelda.
Orthodontics for Dr. Imelda, like it is for so many engineers, allowed her to combine her love of engineering with her love of people and service. As such, she made a professional pivot and completed dental school at Howard University College of Dentistry and Orthodontic Training at Tufts University.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Dr. Imelda’s primary focus is on creating beautiful smiles and enhancing her patients’ quality of life through her work in orthodontics. Outside of her professional commitments, she finds joy in sports, beauty, window shopping, and spending cherished moments with her family, including her husband and three children. Her commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement is evident in her active participation in orthodontic conferences and meetings, allowing her to stay current with the latest advancements in her field.
